Abdominoplasty, or more commonly known as a "tummy tuck," removes excess fat and skin in order to create a smoother and firmer abdomen. This procedure can greatly benefit women with stretched abdominal areas or those who have abdominal fat or loose skin that result in protruding abdomens. Abdominoplasty is a long-lasting solution when normal diet and exercise programs do not work.
This procedure is performed under general anesthesia, but patients will be well enough to go home that same day. A horizontally-oriented incision is made in the area between the pubic hairline and the navel. The surrounding abdominal muscles are repaired and tightened, while excess fat, tissue, and skin are removed. A second incision may also be necessary to remove excess skin in the upper abdomen. Full recovery usually takes about 4 to 6 weeks.
