Dupuytren’s contracture or disease is a condition in which a scar-like tissue forms under the skin of the palm. This gradually pulls the fingers towards the palm and prevents them from fully extending. Surgery is the only option for treatment. The surgeon cuts and separates the bands of tissue, thus freeing the tendons to allow better movement. In some circumstances, skin grafts are also needed to replace the skin. The procedure will significantly improve hand function, particularly if the patient undergoes hand therapy.
